All-Time Scorer Caitlin Clark Leads Iowa Hawkeyes to Sweet 16 Victory over West Virginia Mountaineers

Caitlin Clark Breaks Women’s Scoring Record in Single Season as Iowa Advances to Sweet 16

Caitlin Clark, the top-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes, faced a tough challenge from the eighth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers in the second round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament on Monday night in Iowa City. In her final collegiate home game, Clark set a new scoring record and brought her career points total to 3,830.

Clark’s impressive performance on the court was not limited to just scoring. She also set a new NCAA Division I women’s record for most points scored in a single season with 1,113, surpassing the previous record set by Washington’s Kelsey Plum in 2016-17.

The game was close throughout, with West Virginia tying the game after going on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter. However, Iowa responded with a 12-2 run to secure their victory and advance to the Sweet 16 round against fifth-seeded Colorado in Albany on Saturday.

Clark expressed her gratitude and pride for the program, her teammates, and her overall experience after hosting the first and second-round tournament games. She credited their composure during difficult moments in the game and highlighted how important it was to use their home crowd for support. Clark is WNBA-bound and has played her final collegiate game at Iowa City.

The Hawkeyes have played several exciting games this season that have gone down to wire. In one of those games against Nebraska earlier this year, they came back from an eight-point deficit with less than three minutes remaining to win by one point.

This was another close game where Iowa used its experience and resilience to come out on top. With Colorado waiting for them in Albany next weekend, they will need all of that experience and resilience if they want to make it through to March Madness again.

As for Clark, she has had an incredible career at Iowa State University. She has won three Big Ten titles and two NCAA tournaments during her time there. Her legacy will live on forever as one of the greatest players ever to play for Iowa State University.

Overall, this was an unforgettable night for Caitlin Clark and all of us who were able to witness it live from Iowa City or from anywhere around the world through streaming services like ESPN+ or Yahoo Sports Live TV streaming app (which is available now!). We can only wait with bated breath until we see what happens next weekend when these teams collide again!
