Bainbridge Blends Cultures: A Taste of Asia Meets Haiti in Unique Fusion Restaurants

Entrepreneurs introducing Asian and Haitian cuisine to Bainbridge Island

Two entrepreneurs in Bainbridge are bringing a fusion of Asian and Haitian flavors to the area, offering a one-of-a-kind dining experience for the community. Christine Vancamp, owner of Ono Kine Local Grindz, took a leap of faith by opening an Asian Fusion restaurant at the Bainbridge Marina. She was inspired by her grandparents who left Korea for Hawaii in the 1920s and grew up eating dishes like Shoyu chicken, Kalbi, and lumpia.

On the other hand, Ritho Jean Louis, manager and owner of Ritho Caribbean Spot, has been cooking for his sisters since he was a child and was drawn to Bainbridge during its harvest seasons by ingredients like tomatoes, corn, and peanuts. He noticed a lack of food that resembled his home cuisine and decided to open his own restaurant. Both Louis and Vancamp are introducing locals to dishes that are not typical in traditional Southern cooking scenes.

Vancamp is excited to share her heritage through food with the Bainbridge community. She plans to host an Asian Fusion festival on May 18th at her restaurant where members of the community can try out some unique twists on classic southern dishes. Meanwhile, Louis is planning on hosting a corn festival on May 18th as well, where members of the Haitian and Latino community can bring their own twist to a traditional southern tradition.

Both business owners hope that their culinary traditions will give the community a taste of the comfort food they grew up on while also celebrating diversity in cuisine. By bringing their unique perspectives to Bainbridge’s dining scene, both Louis and Vancamp are creating links between heritage, uniqueness, and progression in a town where racial and ethnic diversity has been less common until now.
