Breaking Barriers: Disney’s Tiana’s Egg Adventures Set to Open, Sparking Conversation around Representation and Inclusion in Theme Parks

Disney closes facility with racist past, The Princess and the Frog takes over

Disney+ has recently announced a price increase for its streaming service in Israel, sparking criticism despite being welcomed. Despite backlash from fans last year over the closure of “Splash Mountain,” Disney is now launching a new ride based on The Princess and the Frog, featuring a black Disney princess named Tiana.

Tiana’s Egg Adventures will open at Disney World on June 28, with a version expected to arrive at Disneyland later this year. This marks a historic moment for Disney as it will be the first flagship facility based on a black character after 69 years in the parks.

Despite past controversy over Disney’s renovations, the company has emphasized that the new ride is a tribute to the multicultural history of New Orleans, with a slogan that reads “Everyone is welcome.” The film “The Princess and the Frog” may not have been popular with audiences initially, but Princess Tiana ranks highly among black women in Disney character surveys.

Disney’s efforts to address problematic aspects of its history are nothing new. The company has made changes to content in films like “Fantasia” and “Aladdin” in response to criticism over racist portrayals. In “Fantasia,” a scene with a black centaur was edited, while in “Aladdin,” changes were made to lyrics that were deemed offensive to Arab audiences. Disney continues to evolve and adapt its content to reflect changing social attitudes and values.
