Dodgers’ Ohtani to Address Media on Mizuhara Investigation Amid Spring Training Exhibition Games

Dodgers manager says Shohei Ohtani gambling scandal has not been a distraction

Ohtani, a two-way star for the Los Angeles Dodgers, is set to address the media on Monday for the first time since Major League Baseball launched an investigation into allegations against his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. The Dodgers fired Mizuhara following claims that he had placed illegal bets on non-baseball sports.

Ohtani is expected to speak before the Dodgers face off against the Angels in a spring training game in the evening. It’s important to note that while Major League Baseball allows personnel to gamble on non-baseball sports as long as it’s legal in the respective jurisdiction, sports betting is still illegal in California. This has led to allegations that Mizuhara placed bets with an accused bookmaker currently under federal investigation.

However, Matthew Bowyer, the accused bookmaker, has denied having any contact with Ohtani. Initially, Mizuhara claimed that Ohtani paid off his debts willingly. Later, he retracted his statement and said that Ohtani was unaware of the situation. Ohtani’s legal team states that he was a victim of theft.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes it will be beneficial for Ohtani to address the media about this situation because it hasn’t been a distraction to the team so far. The Dodgers recently played two games in South Korea and are concluding their exhibition schedule with three games against the Los Angeles Angels before resuming regular season play at the end of the month. During these games in South Korea, Ohtani performed decently, going 3 for 10 with two RBIs.
