This comes after officials in sports programs controlled by the Communist Party received sentences ranging from eight years to life in prison for financial crimes and bribery.

Chen Xuyuan was accused of involvement in match-fixing and financial crimes, and the court ordered the confiscation of all his personal property and the recovery of his illegal gains to be turned over to the state treasury. Other high-ranking officials who were sentenced to prison for accepting bribes include Hong Chen, former head of the National Athletics Association, and Chen Yongliang, a former high-ranking soccer official.

The Chinese Football Association Super League has faced financial instability due to real estate firms struggling to deliver finished apartments or pay back debts. The payments made to players aiming to enhance the league’s brand and potential in China and internationally have faced challenges due to concerns about the financial health of these firms.

Corruption in Chinese soccer has long been an issue, with reports of payoffs to players and referees influencing match outcomes. There are also allegations that payments were made to secure spots for players in training camps, including the national men’s squad currently ranked 88th by FIFA. Meanwhile, women’s national team holds the 19th spot.
