Global Youth Council Launched by TikTok to Enhance Teen Safety on Social Platform | TECHNOLOGY

TikTok has recently unveiled the Global Youth Council, a new initiative designed to enhance the safety of teenagers on the platform. The program brings together 15 young users from different countries to provide insights into well-being and inclusion on the app.

TikTok, owned by ByteDance, already offers various tools to protect minor users and ensure their safety, such as the Family Synchronization feature. However, this new program aims to take it a step further by creating a safe space where young people can freely express themselves without fear of harm or harassment.

The goal of TikTok is to establish a Global Youth Council that will listen to the experiences of young users and work towards enhancing security within the application. The council now consists of 15 teenagers from various countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, Indonesia, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Morocco. These young people represent different communities and are passionate about defending young creators’ interests.

During its second meeting, the Youth Council collaborated with Praesidio Safeguarding, an online security agency that provides expertise in security and digital well-being. The council outlined its priorities for the year ahead, focusing on improving well-being and inclusion for young people on TikTok. Some of their priorities include redesigning the TikTok Youth Portal and gaining more insight into complaints and account blocking processes.

TikTok has also conducted a global study in partnership with ConnectSafely involving over 12,000 adolescents and their guardians. This demonstrates their commitment to working closely with external perspectives in enhancing safety measures on TikTok. As part of this effort, new media literacy campaigns will be launched in the United States aimed at countering misinformation and AI-generated content.

Overall, TikTok’s introduction of the Global Youth Council is a positive step towards creating a safer environment for young people on their platform. By bringing together diverse voices and expertise in security and digital well-being, TikTok is taking proactive measures towards protecting its users while also fostering creativity and self-expression among them.
