UIL Approves Split Divisions for Postseason Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, and Baseball: Changes to Follow 6A Football Championship Structure

UIL Council endorses implementation of split divisions in various sports

On Tuesday, the University Interscholastic League Legislative Council convened to discuss proposed changes in UIL academics, athletics, music, and policy. One of the key decisions made was the approval of split divisions in the postseason for volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, and baseball. This amendment will create two state championship brackets for teams in 2A-6A volleyball, softball, and baseball, 4A-6A soccer, and 1A-6A basketball to advance through the postseason.

This change follows the format currently used for the 6A football championship structure. Schools will remain in their assigned districts per the 2024-26 alignment. The Standing Committee on Athletics proposed this amendment, which will be effective on August 1, 2024 pending approval by the Commissioner of Education.

All approved rule changes from the meeting can be found on the UIL website. A video recap of the meeting is also available for viewing. This news release is copyrighted by KCBD with all rights reserved.
