WhatsApp to Revolutionize Photo Editing with New AI-Powered Features: Backdrop, Restyle, and More

WhatsApp introduces a new feature allowing users to customize photo backgrounds and styles with generative AI

WhatsApp is set to revolutionize photo editing with new features powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI). One of the standout features is the ability to replace your background with another, as well as transform your style based on user descriptions. Meta, which owns WhatsApp, has also been using AI for its Meta AI chatbot and Expressive Media Universe (EMU) tool that creates images from text and enables users to create stickers directly from messaging applications.

In addition to these tools, Meta has introduced two more generative AI-based image editing tools on Instagram: Restyle, which applies visual styles to images based on a description, and Backdrop, which modifies the background according to user instructions. These options are planned for release on the WhatsApp platform as well. The latest version of WhatsApp for Android beta program includes a new button in the photo sending interface that offers options such as cropping and rotating photos, adding stickers and text or using the drawing tool. Alongside this icon for sending high-quality photo is three new options: ‘Backdrop’ (Background), ‘Restyle’ (Change style), and ‘Expand’ (Expand), allowing users to resize images according to their needs. While these photo editing features are currently being developed for Android devices only, it remains unclear if they will be available on iOS devices.
